Bright, bouncy, and irresistibly fun. Polka is pure joy in motion, a spinning, hopping partner dance with a lively beat that has kept people grinning on dance floors for over two hundred years.
About the Style
Polka is a lively Central European dance that emerged in Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) in the early 19th century and swept across Europe and the Americas in a matter of decades. Danced to a fast 2/4 rhythm with a distinctive hop-step-together-step pattern, it's one of the most joyful and energetic dances in the folk and ballroom tradition.
At DFW Young & Social Club, we teach Polka as a rotating partner dance with a focus on the footwork, turning technique, and the playful energy that makes this dance so infectious. Despite its speed, the basics are very accessible, especially for anyone who already has experience with swing-style partner dances.
Polka is guaranteed fun. It's fast, it's bouncy, it's impossible to do without a smile, and it works beautifully with everything from Czech folk music to contemporary country. Once you have it, you'll find yourself using it at venues you never expected.
